What kind of relationship can a resident of Petřiny have with their neighborhood? Is it possible to identify with a panel housing block, the lawn in front of it, or with a place one truly enjoys returning to? The district lacks a strong historical narrative, tradition, or a shared public space capable of giving it a distinct character. Meaningful activity takes place mainly in its surroundings — in the Hvězda Game Reserve, old Liboc, Břevnov Monastery, or along Bělohorská Street. The housing estate itself, however, does not attract visitors; beyond the metro station, shops, and a few services, it offers little reason to linger. It functions more as a dormitory suburb, without an active ground floor or natural meeting places.

The creation of a new square therefore represents an exceptional opportunity. A well-defined, high-quality urban space can provide Petřiny with the missing center and a renewed identity. It will offer seating areas, places for ice cream or coffee, space for pétanque, safe movement for children, and the possibility of food stalls inspired by the Manifesto market concept. The northern part of the square will feature a calm zone with a shallow water surface, providing refreshment and relaxation during the summer months.

The new square will enable farmers’ markets, neighborhood gatherings such as “Petřiny for Itself,” smaller cultural events, and sports competitions. It will become a dignified venue for dialogue between local politicians and residents, ideally complemented by a community hall.

To strengthen local identity, the proposal includes the installation of a sculptural group titled “The Great Figures of Petřiny” — Julius Zeyer, Jaroslav Heyrovský, and Otto Wichterle. With a height of 10–12 meters, the monument would symbolically emphasize their importance. Positioned in the northern part of the square, it could become a new landmark and a source of pride for local residents.
