The study addresses the complete renovation of the public restrooms at the Old Town Hall in Prague. The existing condition no longer reflects the importance of the building nor the expectations of its visitors. An inadequate layout, technical condition, and overall impression became the impulse for creating a timeless, representative, and easily maintainable solution.
For spatial and operational reasons, the original men’s and women’s facilities were swapped. This allowed for the creation of a generous washbasin foyer for the women’s restrooms, while the men’s restrooms now benefit from the exceptional spatial quality of the deep wall niches illuminated by natural daylight. These niches form a rhythmic “comb” along the wall, each accommodating a specific function — washbasins, urinals, cubicles, or storage. The washbasins and urinals are designed as organic “tongues” emerging from the walls, top-lit through translucent artificial stone.
In the entrance niche of the women’s restrooms, a built-in bench is integrated. The dominant feature of the design is the light atmosphere: a formerly technical void between the façade and the glass sculpture by Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová is opened and incorporated into the women’s facilities. This intervention introduces unique overhead daylight that shapes the spatial experience. A second strong lighting element is a glass prism positioned along the central axis, bringing diffused natural light into the interior and subtly separating the washbasin foyer from the cubicle area.
The material concept unifies the space in beige mosaic tiles complemented by brass details — faucets, handrails, and handles. The result is a dignified, timeless, and representative environment corresponding to the prestige of the Old Town Hall.
