The project focuses on the renovation of the public restrooms at the Old Town Hall in Prague, located on two levels. The lower level primarily serves wedding guests, while the upper floor is designated for visitors to the Brožík Hall and Jiřík Hall. A shared entrance foyer extends through both levels, naturally connecting them despite their separate entrances and differing user groups. The aim of the proposal was to elevate the existing facilities to a standard befitting the importance of this historic institution and to create an environment that feels contemporary, dignified, and representative.
The spatial interventions are minimal; the primary transformation concerns surfaces and fixtures. The concept is based on the principle of a “matchbox,” where one space slides into another. The inserted inner volume contains the toilet areas themselves, fully clad in small-format white mosaic tiles, subtly referencing the mosaic by Mikoláš Aleš in the main vestibule of the Town Hall. The result is a refined, clean, and subtly luxurious interior.
This white core is enveloped by a dark, double-height foyer clad in matte black mosaic tiles. The outer space feels raw and mysterious, creating a strong contrast with the bright interior of the toilets. The concept thus works with a pair of opposites — white and black, delicate and rough — complementing each other as naturally as bride and groom.
The design establishes a contemporary, visually strong, and dignified environment corresponding to the prestige of the Old Town Hall and the significance of its visitors.
