A dignified and abstract university building designed as a meeting place for the academic and professional community.

The new building of the University of Chemistry and Technology complements the National Technical Library by forming another important contemporary entrance to the axis of the Dejvice Fourth Quadrant. The massing of the building is defined by the prescribed cubic regulation with a recessed upper floor. As a contextual response to the surrounding environment, the fifth floor is set back to the level of the main cornice of the existing university building. This creates a “gap” — the so-called super-floor — while the entrance lobby at ground level is also volumetrically distinguished.

The light-coloured building mass is visually lightened by functional vertical sun-shading fins that blur the perception of the volume and contribute to its abstract character. During the day the building appears “feathered”, while at night its primary functions — teaching and office spaces — become visible.

The façade consists of 50% solid panels and 50% glazed surfaces, ensuring an optimal energy concept for both summer and winter conditions. The glazed panels can be opened within any module. The vertical fixed sun-shading elements provide shading while maintaining unobstructed outward views.

The building is designed on the basis of a universal modular grid of 900 mm, which runs consistently throughout the entire structure, including the façade, load-bearing system and partition walls.

The basic spatial organisation is straightforward and rational. At its core is a central floor lobby surrounded by rings of classrooms and offices. Each floor offers generous shared areas including lounges, study spaces and refreshments.

The super-floor serves as the most representative multifunctional space for meetings of the academic and professional community. The conference facilities are located at the heart of the school, allowing participants to become part of everyday university life.

A distinctive artistic element connecting the architecture with the world of chemistry is the hexagonal form, referencing the crystal lattice structure of organic compounds.
