The “Na Zmrzlíku” project represents the transformation of a historic farm complex dating from the late 19th century into a physiotherapy center for children in wheelchairs, complemented by animal-assisted therapy. The design works with four existing buildings, preserving and developing their character through contemporary architectural elements.

The manor house remains largely preserved both in appearance and layout, serving as facilities with an office and a private apartment. It is connected to the physiotherapy center, whose ground floor respects the historic structure, particularly the rhythm of the windows, ceiling heights, and vaulted ceilings. The newly inserted second floor is designed as a lightweight, cantilevered timber frame structure with glazed facades on both sides. This element creates a contemporary layer in contrast to the original mass while complementing it proportionally and rhythmically. The projecting timber structure also functions as a canopy at the ground-floor level and as a shading element for the physiotherapy treatment rooms. The roof of the building is used as an accessible observation terrace.

The barn becomes the social heart of the entire complex. The open space with its dominant roof truss is complemented by an inserted “house within a house” volume integrating operational facilities and administration. This volume, defined by a subtly distinct material expression and lighting atmosphere, differentiates itself from the original structure while simultaneously organizing the space. The interior is shaped by natural light brought in through roof skylights and perforations in the gable walls, reinterpreting traditional methods of lighting agricultural buildings. The result is an open space that encourages social interaction and shared activities.

The proposal also includes the renovation of a family house intended for the head physiotherapist. Its street-facing and courtyard character remains preserved, while a new extension facing the garden, featuring a timber structural grid, expands the living spaces and creates a covered terrace.

A unifying motif throughout the project is the recurring timber frame structure, applied across the new elements — from the physiotherapy center and residential areas to the animal therapy facilities. The original building structures will be finished with white plaster, fired clay roof tiles, and white window frames.

This study serves as a basis for further design phases (interior design project, building permit documentation, etc.).
